Voluntary Withdrawal

Students may withdraw from Saint Michael’s College either temporarily or permanently. If the withdrawal occurs early in the semester, a partial refund of tuition and fees may be available. (Refer to the Student Financial Services refund policy for details.)

To initiate a withdrawal, students should obtain a withdrawal form from the Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Education and return the completed form to that office. The Dean will then file the form with the Registrar’s Office.

Transcript Implications

  • Before the Drop/Add deadline: No courses will appear on the student’s transcript.

  • After the Drop/Add deadline but before the course withdrawal deadline: Students will receive grades of WD for all enrolled courses.

  • After the course withdrawal deadline: Students will receive final letter grades in their courses, which may include failing grades. This applies to both official withdrawals (with notice) and unofficial withdrawals (without notice).

Exceptions to this policy may be considered by the Dean of Undergraduate Education in cases of non-medical emergencies or personal tragedies occurring between the course withdrawal deadline and the end of the term. Students who leave the College for medical and/or mental heath reason after the course withdrawal deadline may fall under the Medical & Involuntary Withdrawal outlined in this catalog.

The official withdrawal date is typically the date the student provides written notice of intent to withdraw. In some cases, the last date of attendance or participation in an academic activity may be used. Final determination of the official withdrawal date is made by the Registrar’s Office, in consultation with the Dean of Undergraduate Education.

Return to the College

Students who wish to return to Saint Michael’s College after a voluntary withdrawal should notify the Office of the Registrar by December 1 for the spring semester, April 1 for the summer term, and by August 1 for the fall semester. Readmission of voluntarily withdrawn students will be on a space-available basis.
