Engineers translate their knowledge of science and mathematics into innovative designs and products like "smart" buildings, renewable energy solutions, efficient transportation systems, and groundwater monitoring systems. Engineers make decisions on a daily basis that affect the lives and well-being of thousands of people. Because those decisions require human, societal, and technical expertise, a Saint Michael's liberal arts foundation provides budding engineers with broader perspective on the world. SMC engineering majors are not only highly trained in their fields, but who are also knowledgeable and concerned about the wider impact of their work. The College's 3+2 engineering program with the University of Vermont (UVM) begins with mathematics and laboratory science courses at Saint Michael's, where students have access to professors in the classroom and laboratories. Students take introductory engineering courses at UVM while matriculated at Saint Michael's before transferring to UVM for full immersion in engineering coursework. Students graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Engineering from SMC alongside an ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science in Biomedical, Civil, Electrical, Environmental or Mechanical Engineering from UVM. Students may also pursue UVM's interdisciplinary Engineering Managment degree.
