Program Description

The American Studies minor at Saint Michael’s College offers an interdisciplinary exploration of the cultures, histories, and politics of the United States and the broader Americas. Through the study of traditions, institutions, geography, the arts, and mass culture, students engage with diverse American identities and perspectives. The curriculum emphasizes intersectional analysis—considering ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, religion, and citizenship—to examine the varied experiences that shape American life. Central to the program are the questions “What is America?” and “What does it mean to be American?” with attention to indigenous, local, borderland, and diasporic communities. Distinct in its emphasis on community-based learning and the public humanities, the program encourages civic engagement through partnerships with local organizations.
