Program Description

Grounded in principles of equity and inclusion, Saint Michael's TESOL programs emphasize linguistically and culturally responsive teaching. Coursework integrates current research in language acquisition, linguistics, and language assessment, preparing graduates to support multilingual learners in a variety of educational contexts. Field experiences provide opportunities to apply strategies in real-world classrooms under the guidance of experienced mentors. Licensed Vermont school teachers seeking to add a Multilingual Learner endorsement may pursue the MATESOL program to fulfill academic competencies required by the Vermont Department of Education. The coursework involves a 60-hour associated practicum component to meet state-mandated student teaching requirements. Endorsement candidates must also pass the Praxis II (ESOL) exam to satisfy state requirements.
