Integrating Art, Social Studies, and Language Arts: Pre-K-8

Course Title

Integrating Art, Social Studies, and Language Arts: Pre-K-8

Course Description

In this condensed summer course, we will explore effective and creative ways to approach interdisciplinary, standards-based curriculum development with an intentional focus on the current socio-political climate in the U.S. As we consider and perhaps reconsider our own approaches to integrated social studies instruction, it is imperative we address racial inequity and racism head on. Literature, digital media, visual art, drama, theory, primary sources, and our own experiences are the "texts'' to bridge our understanding of history with the social and civic issues of today. This course embraces equity pedagogies with a specific interest in the teaching strategies and dispositions needed to empower and affirm students marginalized by social inequity; equally important, to guide those with more privilege to counter stereotypes, question ingrained biases, and unlearn the deficit ideologies that serve to sustain social inequity.
