HI 143 - Modern East Asia A survey of the global and interconnected histories of China, Taiwan, Japan, and Korea from the eighteenth century to the present. We will examine the cultural foundations and common linguistic, religious, philosophical, and political roots of contemporary East Asia. In doing so, we will encounter socioeconomic and ideological disruptions, imperialism, the specter of nationalism, and the ways history itself has been a tool used to shape the region.
