The peace and justice minor is an interdisciplinary program of study designed to prepare students to be responsible critics of contemporary society and effective agents of social transformation. A values-based minor, the core courses of Peace and Justice Studies incorporate a method of analysis which is informed by the common moral teachings of the great world religions and, in particular, the tradition of Catholic social teaching. Students may choose elective courses from a variety of fields, including Political Science, Philosophy, and Religious Studies. Reflecting the charism of the Edmundites, the service-oriented religious order that founded Saint Michael’s College, most Peace and Justice courses have a service-learning component. Completion of the minor requires the satisfaction of competency requirements in five areas: community based research, community organizing, community education, political advocacy, and conflict resolution.
