Director: Professor Benjamin White

The department’s graduate and professional programs include a master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MATESOL), a graduate certificate in TESOL, and a summer certificate in TESOL. These programs prepare teachers to teach English in a variety of settings in the United States and abroad.

The graduate TESOL curriculum gives an overview of current theories and methodologies, stresses professional competence in instructional development and delivery, and provides a practicum experience which relates research and theory to the ESOL classroom. The summer TESOL/TEFL certificate program provides a practical experience in an intensive four-week format, and current Saint Michael’s College undergraduates can receive four undergraduate credits (for further study at the  graduate level at Saint Michael’s,six credits of advanced standing may be awarded with completion of a capstone). The focus of this program is on classroom techniques for ESOL teaching, with theoretical grounding briefly introduced. The graduate and certificate student body includes both domestic and international students. The Applied Linguistics Department, (ALD) in conjunction with the Education Department, also offers a state-approved program for initial licensure to teach ESL in Vermont public schools. As an extension of the MATESOL, the ALD also offers a program to add an ESL Endorsement to an initial license.

See Graduate Catalog for program requirements.
