TEFL/TESOL Certificate

or The TEFL/TESOL Certificate is an intensive, four-week professional training course (120 hours) offered each summer for prospective teachers of English as a Foreign Language or to Speakers of Other Languages. It covers all essential aspects of English language teaching from a practical classroom perspective. It offers concrete experience with methods and techniques reflecting current principles of communicative language teaching and learning. This program is ideal for new entrants to the TEFL/TESOL field, as well as for working teachers who wish to gain a professional qualification or to update their methodology. Students who complete a portfolio of required project work may be eligible for four undergraduate credits (AL410) and/or six credits of advanced standing toward the SMC MATESOL program.
 

Admission Requirements for TEFL/TESOL Certificate


  • Completed application form.
  • Official transcript from highest educational level attained (High School graduation required.)
  • One-page statement of purpose explaining your interest in the TEFL/TESOL Certificate.
  • One letter of recommendation from a person qualified to assess your academic/professional potential for the Program.


International students must also include:

  • Affidavit of financial support and financial documentation.
  • Official TOEFL score report from the testing agency.  The minimum score for admission is 530 PBT.
  • Photocopy of passport page showing correct spelling of name and date of birth.

Course Structure


The program comprises 90 hours of instruction and 30 hours of classroom observation, teaching, and reflection.  Students observe and teach class with experienced teachers in Saint Michael’s Intensive English Program.
