Students take two courses each from the natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences. As many of these required courses as possible should be completed by the end of the second year. In fact, it is highly recommended that incoming students interested in environmental studies major complete one or two of these courses during the Fall semester of their first year.

In the second year the student must propose to the Environmental Studies Steering Committee a four-course concentration on a topic of interest for final approval during the fall semester of the third year.
