Mathematics has always been at the core of the liberal arts. Its study has always been prized both for the precision of mind that it confers and for the clarity and beauty of the subject matter. Mathematics is today also the foundation and language of the physical sciences, and recently it has come to pervade the biological and social sciences as well.
Consequently the Mathematics program has been designed both for those who wish to study the subject for its own sake and for those who are interested in its widespread applications. Our major starts with required courses that provide a strong foundation in the principal areas and finishes with a set of electives - in both pure and applied areas - to tailor our program to each individual’s needs.
A major in Mathematics provides the background for many different careers. Our graduates work in industry, for example as actuaries for insurance or finance companies, or as analysts in the computer and telecommunications industry. Many of our students receive state certification to teach in secondary or elementary school by completing education courses along with their major. We also have had many students move on to graduate school.
