HI 338 - Tiananmen in History and Memory In 1989, millions of Chinese demonstrated for political reform. Protests and the hunger strike by students on Tiananmen Square ended with the army’s firing on unarmed civilians. Leaders were purged, imprisoned, or exiled. This seminar explores the Tiananmen Movement in history and memory as well as its long-term impact.
