Arts Concentration Information

The M.Ed. Arts concentration is designed to help participants explore and affirm the indispensable role of the arts in schools and society. Perhaps now more than ever, people are turning to the arts to celebrate, grieve, advocate, inspire, and connect with each other. The M.Ed. Arts Concentration comprises 36 graduate credits, 15 of which make up the core of the program. The remaining 21 elective credits are chosen by the student with support from an advisor in order to build a comprehensive program that allows the student to pursue their desired area of focus. Up to nine credits may be transferred from another institution if they are relevant to the program concentration and approved by the advisor.

The goal of the M.Ed. Arts Concentration is for classroom teachers, art teachers, all educators, artists, administrators, and others to collaboratively explore how to teach and inspire students of all ages learning with and through the arts. In supportive environments, students engage in the creative process; reflect on cultural and aesthetic perspectives; work individually and collaboratively to develop and practice innovative and interdisciplinary pedagogies; and address social justice and sustainability through an arts lens. This program is designed to expand creative boundaries and examine the role of the arts in developing expressive and critical voice in the classroom. Partnerships with the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts, the Integrated Arts Academy in Burlington, the Fleming Museum at the University of Vermont, and Burlington City Arts enrich the Arts concentration.

M.Ed. Arts Required Courses

• GED 558 - Educator as Researcher Credits: 3 cr.
• GED 649 - Arts: The Creative Process Credits: 3 cr.
• GED 651 - Hands on! Learning In and Through the Visual Arts Credits: 3 cr.

• OR

  GED 674 - Multicultural Arts
    Credits: 3 cr.

• GED 678 - Heroes, Social Justice, and the Arts: Aesthetic Perspectives Credits: 3 cr.

• OR

  GED 693 - Integrating Art, Social Studies, and Language Arts: Pre-K-6
    Credits: 3 cr

• GED 699 - Capstone Seminar Credits: 3 cr.

Art Elective Courses

A minimum of nine credits of the remaining 21 credits in Arts in Education elective courses is required.

Examples include:

• GED 531 - Digital Animation and Motion Graphics Credits: 3 cr.
• GED 624 - The Art of the Book Credits: 3 cr.
• GED 673 - Special Topics in Arts Education Credits: 1-3 cr.

• Up to 18 credits of the coursework toward the licensure in Arts may be applied toward the requirements for the M.Ed. degree.
