MAT Program

The Saint Michael’s College Master of Arts in Teaching program (MAT) provides an innovative and intensive program that attracts candidates from diverse backgrounds to be agents of change in the field of education. The MAT is an accelerated one- or two-year program that leads to initial licensure and a master’s degree. The MAT is designedf as a fifth year initial licensure option for undergraduates as well as a stand-alone licensure and master’s degree program for those seeking a career change. The MAT offers licensure tracks in art, elementary, middle, secondary and special education with the option of pursuing additional endorsements (in early childhood education, for example). Candidates pursuing the one-year full-time option will begin coursework in May and graduate the following May. The majority of courses in the summer and fall are offered in the evening, and the spring semester includes full-time student teaching and the capstone seminar.

Art Education
Saint Michael’s College Graduate Programs in Education has a state-approved program that leads to teacher licensure in visual arts (Pre-K-12).
Prerequisites for Admission to Art Education Licensure Program include:
- A bachelor’s degree with a major in visual arts, supporting the liberal arts general education courses, and fulfillment of the Vermont Agency of Education guidelines for an endorsement in art.
- Evidence of enrollment or audit or subject area with the last five years.
- Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0, and GPA of 3.0 in subject area.
- Portfolio of 10 pieces showing range of artistic literacy to be presented at interview.
- Successful completion of the entrance interview with Coordinator of Arts in Education.
- Evidence of successful work experience with children.
All initial licensure applicants must also apply to the MAT. We now offer an additional endorsement (different content area or level) for students if requirements have been met. Please consult your advisor.
Elementary Education
Saint Michael’s College Graduate Programs in Education have a state-approved program that leads to licensure as an elementary teacher in grades K-6.
Prerequisites for Admission to the Elementary Licensure Program include:
- A bachelor’s degree with successful completion of a liberal arts or science major or equivalent as defined in the Vermont Licensure Rules.
- Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher, and a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the major.
- Successful completion of the entrance interview.
- Evidence of successful work experience with children.
All initial licensure applicants will apply to the MAT. Candidates may be eligible for an additional endorsement (different content area or level, for example, early childhood education) if requirement have been met. Interested candidates should consult with their advisor.
Early Childhood Education Endorsement
The Early Childhood Education Endorsement for Pre-Kindergarten through grade 3 is available for all elementary education licensure students. It requires two supplementary early childhood courses: GED 521 Early Childhood Education: Foundations; GED 524 Early Childhood Education: Methods and Practice.
These courses must be taken in conjunction with all the required elementary education courses in addition to the Early Childhood Education Praxis test.
This endorsement is designed to prepare early education graduates who are committed to the provision of quality early childhood education for each and every child and their family. Using evidence-based practice, it emphasizes the values of equity and inclusion in supporting students to develop skills that will prepare them to work in diverse early education learning environments.
Students will investigate contemporary early education program models, current research and advocacy issues in addition to a comprehensive overview of the early education curriculum with an emphasis on learning through play. Students who wish to pursue the Early Childhood Education Endorsement will also complete a practicum in an early childhood setting and will be required to student teach in grades K-3 (preferably in Kindergarten).
Middle Level Education
Saint Michael’s College Graduate Programs in Education have a state-approved program that leads to licensure as a middle level teacher in grades 5-9 in English, social studies, science, or math.
Prerequisites for Admission to the Middle Level Licensure Program include:
- A bachelor’s degree.
- Eighteen credits in the content area of licensure with at least six of those credits at the advanced undergraduate level or higher as defined in the Vermont Licensing Rules.
- Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 3.0, and a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the content area.
- Successful completion of the entrance interview.
- Evidence of successful work experience with children.
All initial licensure applicants will apply to the MAT. Candidates may be eligible for an additional endorsement (different content area or level) if requirements have been met. Interested candidates should consult with their advisor.
Secondary Education
Saint Michael’s College Graduate Programs in Education have a state-approved program that leads to licensure as a secondary teacher in grades 7-12 in the following subject areas: English, Modern and Classical Languages, Mathematics, General Science, and Social Studies.
Prerequisites for Admission to the Secondary Licensure Program:
- A bachelor’s degree.
- A thirty-credit major (or equivalent) in the content area of licensure with at least nine of those credits at the advanced undergraduate level or higher as defined in the Vermont Licensing Rules.
- Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher, and a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the content area.
- Successful completion of the entrance interview.
- Evidence of successful work experience with children.

Special Education
Saint Michael’s College Graduate Programs in Education have a state-approved program that leads to licensure as special educator in grades K-8, grade 7-age 21, or K-age-21.
Prerequisites for Admission to the Elementary Licensure Program include:
- A bachelor’s degree with successful completion of a liberal arts or science major or equivalent as defined in the Vermont Licensin Rules.
- Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher, and a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the major.
- Successful completion of the entrance interview.
- Evidence of successful work experience with children.
