Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MATESOL, Certificate in TESOL, Diploma in TESOL)

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Departments and Programs

The department’s graduate and professional programs include a master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MATESOL), a graduate certificate in TESOL, and a diploma in TESOL. These programs prepare teachers to teach English in a variety of settings in the United States and abroad.

The graduate TESOL curriculum gives an overview of current theories and methodology, stresses professional competence in instructional development and delivery, and provides a practicum experience which relates research and theory to the ESOL classroom. The diploma program in TESOL provides experiences similar to those of the graduate programs in an intensive six-week summer format, but does not carry academic credit (for further study at both undergraduate and graduate levels at Saint Michael’s, up to six credits of advanced standing may be awarded). The focus of this program is on practical classroom techniques for ESOL teaching, with theoretical issues briefly introduced. The graduate and diploma student body includes both North American and international students.

The Department of Applied Linguistics, in conjunction with the Education Department, also offers a state approved program for initial Licensure to teach ESL in Vermont public schools. The Graduate Teacher License/K-12 ESL Endorsement Program may be completed in conjunction with the MATESOL. A program to add an ESL Endorsement to an initial license is also offered.

See Graduate Catalog for program requirements.
