The Applied Linguistics Department (ALD) has long been recognized for leadership in teacher training, English language instruction, and academic preparation for undergraduate/graduate studies in the U.S. to international students of diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. It maintains the following academic programs:  the English Language Programs (ELP), which comprise the Intensive English Program (IEP) and the Pathway Academic English Program (AEP); two undergraduate minors: TESOL Minor and Linguistics Minor; and the graduate and professional programs in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). These programs were developed to reflect Saint Michael’s mission to promote international and intercultural understanding. The ALD has enrolled students from across the globe for more than six decades. Nearly 25,000 international students, representing nearly 80 countries, have studied on the Saint Michael’s campus.

Saint Michael’s Intensive English Program (IEP) was initiated in 1954 to provide international students with intensive study of the English language and American culture. As Saint Michael’s reputation for international student education grew, several other programs were developed. The Master’s program in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MATESOL) was established in 1962 and the Pathway Academic English Program (AEP), which prepares students for long-term academic study, began in 1972. Other ALD programs include 4+1 MATESOL, MATESOL Pathway Program, public school PK-12 ELL Endorsement Program, Graduate Certificate in TESOL Program, an intensive Summer TESOL/TEFL Certificate Program, MATESOL Online +on Campus, a Peace Corps Coverdell Fellows Program in TESOL, and a Peace Corps Prep Program.
