GED 542 - Pre-K-12 Curriculum and Assessment

Students will come to a deeper understanding of community and how it relates to the Pre-K-12 classroom culture and curriculum. Through the multiple lenses of place- based education, sustainability, and service learning, we will critically examine and apply curriculum theory, instructional and assessment strategies, content knowledge, and the national standards to develop a comprehensive, integrated unit of study. The development of this unit can focus on an ELL, Special Education, Art, and/or heterogeneous class. In addition, Vermont’s Core Teaching and Learning Standards and the National Association will guide the course for the Education of Young Children. Diversity in student populations, as well as 21st century challenges that manifest in both the student’s classroom and their home will be explored. Together, in an interactive learning environment emphasizing reflective thinking, writing, dialogue, and collaboration, we will explore the integral role of curriculum and assessment in fostering student learning and growth.
