GED 640 - Language and Learning

This course considers how difficulties in language acquisition and usage affect a student’s ability to succeed in the classroom. Students will learn research-based approaches to teaching oral language, written language, academic language, vocabulary and reading comprehension for atypically developing students in whole class, small group and individual instructional settings.  Emphasis will be placed on students in grades K-12 with language based disabilities in inclusive and remedial settings.  Course includes a 1 credit practicum in which students are expected to work with a school age student for a minimum of 3 hours per week in the area of language/literacy.   

Prerequisites:
Prerequisite is GED 522 Teaching Literacy in the Elementary Classroom or GED 606 Literacy Development and Instruction K-8, or permission from the advisor.

Credits: 3 cr.
